The music line-up for the summer of 2016 seems to become the fiercest in the history of Danish music festivals.

Beyoncé, Coldplay, Paul McCartney, Muse, AC/DC and Bruce Springsteen are just a few of the world-famous artists that will fill arenas and stadiums around the small kingdom of Denmark. And then there are the festivals. From the end of May to the end of August there will barely be a weekend without 25.000, 30.000, or 70.000 Danes drinking beers on a grassy field (or a muddy pitch) to the tunes of musicians such as Beck, Red Hot Chili Peppers and Rammstein.

The competition for the audience has this year been sharpened further with the arrival of the ‘Heartland Festival’ that will have its first attempt of seducing the music lovers in the idyllic surroundings of Egeskov Castle. But Roskilde festival will still be, as it has been for many years, the undefeated giant on the festival scene.

Roskilde Festival

Like so many other years, the Roskilde Festival of this summer will definitely be worth the muddy shoes, sunburned shoulders and hangovers.

Neil might no longer be Young, but he will quite certainly deliver a great concert, maybe even better than former years, where the festival have had the pleasure of presenting Bruce Springsteen, The Rolling Stones and Paul McCartney.

Headliners such as Red Hot Chili Peppers, Mø, Macklemore and Ryan Lewis makes for a great start, and furthermore, everybody knows that the most memorable music experiences often may not even take place on the big Orange Scene, but elsewhere on the festival. And for the lesser known artists Roskilde Festival is also strong this year – Gojira, Sturgill Simpson, Peaches, James Blake and At The Drive-In are all top dogs in their respective genres. There aren’t really performers that have not been introduced at Roskilde Festival before – but most of them are warmly welcomed.

NorthSide Aarhus

Aarhus, 17th – 19th of June

NorthSide only took a few years to become a great alternative to the big brother Roskilde Festival - and so the NorthSide festival of 2016 will be as well.

The continual quality is simply rock solid in Aarhus, where the festival organisers put their money on timeless names such as Beck, Iggy Pop, Wilco, Sigur Rós and Deftones.

This year will have to show how Duran Duran and The Chemical Brothers will handle the always attractive and well functioning festival space and its two splendid stages. And even without having to bring the top names of the industry, NorthSide shows that the festival is definitely here to stay.

The programme of this year’s metal festival is heavily packed. The festival is lucky enough to be hosting the legendary Black Sabbath’s Danish farewell performance, and at the same time it will host the experienced Megadeth, Scorpions, King Diamond and steady going Alice Cooper.

Not only the music – but for sure also the atmosphere and the many other activities (like drinking beer – cheers!) are so delightful that Copenhell is still worth a visit.

Tønder Festival

Tønder, 25th – 28th of August

Last year the festival exceeded itself – and the festival of this year also has a great outlook. While still maintaining the last few years evolution towards renewal and a shift in generations in music, Tønder Festival presents experienced American artists like Rosanne Cash, Tim O’Brien, and Mary Gauthier to lure the audiences to the music scenes in southern Denmark.

Young Danish artists like Tina Dickow and Kira Skov represent the coming of the younger generation, while also having older generations, such as Niels Skousen, bringing a traditional mix of folk music, country and blues.

Heartland Festival

Egeskov Castle,10th – 11th of June

Two years ago there were no international music festivals on the island of Fyn – now there are two. One of them, Tinderbox, targets a wide audience, but Heartland chooses to focus on a narrower genre, while also including contemporary art as well as gastronomy.

In the park surrounding Egeskov Castle, edgy artists like The Flaming Lips, Low and Sun Kil Moon will be found, while legendary Brian Eno will be performing in the Knights Hall of Egeskov Castle.
