Fly rods are rated on a scale of weight from 1 to 15. The numbers are assigned by the American Fly Fishing Trade Association (AFFTA).

The weight rating indicates the line "weight" needed to properly flex or load the rod for casting.

A 1-weight is the lightest rod and 15-weight is the heaviest. There are some manufacturers that have produced line weights lower than 1 (e.g., Sage 000 weight).

Note: More 5-weight rods are sold than any other weight. You may see rods listed with multiple weights (e.g., 5-6, 7-8). These rods are suitable for either line weight depending on user's needs.

1- and 2-weight: Extreme Ultralight Freshwater

Suitable where small flies are used for panfish and small trout.
Less than 1 weight is even more challenging.

3- and 4-weight: Ultralight Freshwater

More versatile than the 1 and 2-weights, but still best with small flies for smaller panfish and trout where wind is less problematic.

5-weight: Light Freshwater

The most popular rod for the trout stream, also excellent for panfish and small bass

6- and 7-weight: Medium Freshwater/Light Saltwater

A good choice for throwing larger flies, larger trout rivers and for heavy panfish. They also work as medium-weight bass rods and ultralight to light saltwater rods for bonefish and other small flats species. Easier for casting in windy conditions.

8- and 9-weight: Heavy Freshwater/Medium Saltwater

Freshwater, such as carp or bass fishing with large bugs: medium saltwater for bonefish, baby tarpon, Snook, etc.

10-weight: Extremely Heavy Freshwater/Medium-Heavy Saltwater

For very strong fish, such as tarpon, salmon, roosterfish, permit, etc. Generally, users are casting very heavy or large flies and/or extreme wind situations.

11- and12-weight: Heavy Saltwater

Built for large saltwater species such as adult tarpon.

13, 14 and 15-weight: Extremely Heavy Saltwater

Used for billfish, sharks, tuna and other extreme big-game fish.

Rods shorter than 9 feet:

Useful when fishing on small streams or other tight spaces.
Can be a handicap on long casts or when mending line.
Shorter rods feel lighter and are less tiring to use.

9 Feet

The most popular rod length for fly rods.
Handles various fishing conditions well without the extra weight and casting effort that comes with longer rods.

Rods longer than 9 feet

Make longer casts easier than shorter rods.
Greater advantage for mending and other line-handling techniques (e.g., European nymphing techniques).
Extra weight is more tiring than shorter rods.
Leverage for stillwater fishing and float-tube applications

Rods meant to be cast using two hands are often known as spey rods.

These rods are typically 12-feet long or longer.
Most often used on large salmon and steelhead rivers where long casts and enhanced line-handling techniques are common.

A variation on the spey rod is the shorter switch rod.
